The National Institute Open Schooling (NIOS), formerly the National Open School (renamed in 2002), is the Board of Education under the Central Government of India. It was established in 1989 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India with the aim of enhancing literacy to provide education to all sections of the society and to pursue flexible learning.

National Institute Open Schooling in Delhi carries out major sets of activities Providing educational education at the free basic education level
1. To provide academic education at secondary and senior secondary levels.
1. Secondary: The minimum age for taking admission in the secondary course is 14 years as on July 31 of the current year (for details, see brochure).
2. A learner who holds a self-certificate "I have studied enough to be able to pursue the secondary course" is also eligible for admission to the secondary course.
3. A learner who studied at the secondary level can also take admission in NIOS to complete his course or improve his performance.
4. Senior Secondary: The minimum age for taking admission in senior secondary courses is 15 years. on July 31 of the current year.
5. To take admission in a senior secondary course, the learner must have passed the secondary course from a recognized board.

1. The following School Education Boards of pre-secondary/secondary Senior secondary learners who have passed in at least one subject but have not qualified in the course can take admission in the respective course at NIOS and avail the facility of TOC.
2. A learner should seek transfer of credit (TOC) at the time of admission to subjects that are included in the NIOS scheme of the study.
3. Learners who had applied for transfer of credit (TOC) will have to send the original failed mark sheet to the regional center concerned mentioning the reference number behind the marksheet.
